Web Design: Is It Difficult To Learn?

Web design is a passion. It takes more than just a creative mind and the most technologically advanced desktop computer in the world. It needs you to be the design --- or be a part of it.

If you currently find yourself feeling a strong irresistible drive to try out web design, then you should not get all intimidated by the "technical stuff". It's normal to feel a bit overwhelmed by all the buttons you have to click and stuff you need to highlight before you get the results that you want. Technicalities are always part of everything so you should understand the concept of learning and finally being expert in the field of web designing. Remember, practice makes perfect. It still does.

It all sounds like something only the geniuses do --- or a good part of the nerd society. It can be talent, yes, but it can also be learned. So you don't have to feel intimidated at all. There is a set of do-it-yourself tools available easily at your disposable. With determination, interest and passion, it's all going to fall into place. That, and probably a bit of help from the experts too. It's always good when you have people behind your back who can guide you every step of the way.

Web Design: Is It Difficult To Learn?

There's a catch though. One thing you need to be good at when you're starting on web designing is your grasp for instructions. You need to be keen to details as well as not losing the creativity in you. Following step-by-step procedures sounds easy enough but when things start to get too technical, that's when you need have tremendous patience too.

But anyway, if "interest" is not a problem, then everything will else will be a breeze --- trust us.

Let's start with the basics --- the term web design is being used to characterize any tasks engaged in creating a web page. It's like interior decorating, only interior decorating is done in a home, while web design is done on a website. The term is created in order to describe several tasks included in making a web page. In other words, it is a job that is more focused on creating a front-end of a web page. If that's too technical enough, don't worry --- that's normal.

It is actually easier than it sounds. Once you're hands-on, everything else will be simpler. A website is a collection of an online content. These online content are applications, texts, images, sounds and documents that are in a web server or servers. You can also find two basic aspects when it comes to web page that is found in the Internet.

The task of creating a web page is generally difficult compared to the traditional print media. For a web page, the possibilities seem limitless. With the creation of other embedded technologies, web design just became much more interesting.

Picking Colors For Your Website

Whether you're building just one website, or a half dozen a month, one of the first things you have to do is decide on a color scheme. You may have no background in design, or you may be a color-blind web designer. (No, really, I know one!) Either way, it's not always the easiest task to decide on a color scheme for your website. While blue is always an option, let's face it, blue is one of the most over-used colors on the web. I have to admit, I've used it plenty of times. But even if you are going with a blue theme, what shade should you use? What complementary colors should you use? The answers are not always apparent.

First, let's discuss the meanings of some basic colors. Keep in mind that these meanings can vary slightly from country to country.

Red is the color most commonly found in the nations' flags. It can also signify passion, anger, war, power, danger or even love. Red tends to stand out when among other colors.

Picking Colors For Your Website

Green is the national color of Ireland. It's also the color of money. It can signify greed, envy, jealousy or nature. Green is considered a cool color.

Blue can signify sadness. As the color of the sky and ocean, it is also said to be a relaxing color. Along with green, blue is considered to be a cool color, unless it's a darker blue.

Purple is the color of royalty. It is said to help develop the imagination of children. Some sources say that almost 75% of pre-adolescent children prefer purple to any other color. It combines the positive aspects of blue and red, and can even convey romance.

Yellow can signify cowardice. It can also signify support of troops, sunshine or even food. It occasionally conveys jealousy and deceit.

Orange can signify joy, sunshine, enthusiasm, happiness and creativity. As a combination of red and yellow, it conveys many of the same feelings. While not standing out quite as much as red, it does not have much of the negative association that yellow has.

White can mean peace. It also means light, success, simplicity, purity, good luck and cleanliness.

Black conveys secrecy. It can also represent sophistication, evil, illegality or just plain darkness. Black is often considered the color of grief and even death.

So, by now you should have picked the main color or colors you're wanting to use on your site. It may be that just a couple of colors is fine, as in this site. On the other hand, you may need more colors than that, as evidenced on this site. So how do you pick all those colors without having a degree in graphic design?

First off, keep in mind that you shouldn't pick too many colors. Really, a scheme that uses five colors probably has too many. On the other hand, in your design, fading from one color to another (a gradient) in the header or elsewhere may be okay, and not count as many different colors. There's an example of gradients on this site.

There's a really neat tool out there for non-graphic designers known as a color wheel. There are a variety of these online. Some of them will actually generate a whole color scheme for you, others will just pick a couple of complementary colors. When using these, remember that you don't have to use every single color they suggest.

Color Scheme Generator Color Code Combination Chooser Color Palette Generator

So now you have the entire color scheme for your website. So what should you do with it?

The main text of your website should generally be on some light color. If this is the case, generally black is a good choice for the text of the site, regardless of whether or not that was one of the colors in your scheme. In rare cases, a dark color is okay for the background. In those cases, white or some other very light color should be used for the text.

Any borders, header graphics and text headings should use the other colors from your scheme. With the text headings, it's a good idea to still use a color that contrasts well with whatever background it is on. If you have a light background, as will often be the case, use a dark color from your color scheme for the headings. And the reverse applies as well.

Make sure you also customize your links. Make sure they are a distictly different color from your normal text, while not blending too much into the background. If you decide to set a different color for links that have been followed and/or are being hovered over with the mouse cursor, there are some guidelines to follow. Generally, a lighter or darker shade of that same color you are already using will work well. If you want to use something different, picking a gray that stands out from the background often works well.

There you go! Now you have a nice color scheme and have applied it well to your website. Your website, with a good color scheme, will go far in conveying professionalism.

Web Design - Scannability

Would it interest you to know that most web users don't come to your site to appreciate the attractiveness of the design? That's not to say that an attractive web design isn't important. However, the majority of site visitation happens because the consumer was motivated to look at your site to see if you could give them a reason to purchase from your ecommerce business.

The web is based on small resolution sizes. The words read online aren't even as clear as newsprint. The pictures are often low resolution and a computer screen can tax the best of vision.

Practical Application

Web Design - Scannability

One of the most cost effective applications this information can produce is that you may not need a website filled with all the toys such as Java Script or Flash design. These tools add spice to your website, but can often detract or even annoy visitors who are simply looking for information they expect to find on your website.

A well ordered website can reap incredible rewards for ecommerce business. Effective bullet points, keywords or phrases accented in bold type and an easy to navigate page may have a greater impact on your ecommerce web design than anything.

What this may also mean is that the web design options you can chose from may expand.

Self-Directed Design

You see, if you know what will help make your site better you can self-direct the development of the site through template rich designs that allow you total control over the text in an easy to use environment that does not require the use of complicated code or extended training seminars to use.

Obviously many web design experts would rather have you seek an alternative using their personalized service, but in the end you have a stronger interest in the success of your website than a hired web developer. If you can utilize the tools available to make your site user friendly and highly scannable you will likely find you can achieve your own success in web design.

Writing for the Web

Content writing for web pages is not the same as writing for any other type of content. Thoughts must be compact and content must be scannable. This means when you write for the web you must help your reader find the subject they are most interested in using a sub-heading or indexing system that allows a quick scan to determine if your web page contains the information they need.

Even if your website does not contain the exact information your visitor wants they may be pleased to know it didn't require extended reading to make that determination. In turn the visitor may venture to other pages of online content to determine if you have the information they need elsewhere on your site.

Web Design: How to Do It Successfully?

Web design is a process of making your own web page or website in a manner or look you want it to be. It includes all sorts of revising or remaking a look for a page in the internet like graphics, multi-media enhancers - videos, images and even applications, SEOs, animations, communication designs, and the purpose of the said website. This can be done through HTML Coding. It is not easy to use it. Better to learn it first in order for you to make your own web design.

How can you do a web design?

There are a few steps to be followed or you can refer to when making a web design. These are helpful ways to achieve the best and greatest look for your page.

Web Design: How to Do It Successfully?

1. Layout.

You must have a page layout. A layout is a plan or draft of your design. It is similar to a sketch or is a temporary design. If designing isn't your thing, you must choose what fits best on your wants and needs. Layout also is mainly the positioning of the content, multi-media materials, and information about your web page. The design is usually done on graphic tools available on your unit.

There are some elements you should consider when making your own web design.

• Draw first your design on a blank sheet of paper.
• The design resolution.
• Height of the header and footer.
• The placement of the content to make it visible, readable, and functional.
• White spaces should be incorporated within multi-media materials and texts.
• Don't make it too complicated. Organize and do not overload the information contained on a page.

2. Colour Scheme

This is the second stop on making your web design, choosing the colour scheme that is only right on your design. It should only comprise of 2 or 3 combinations of colours because it will be too difficult to manage and control more than 3.

Here are tips on choosing the colours.

• At least 2 or 3 dark shades must be selected.
• Make the colour of your text visible and readable. Match a light-coloured text with a dark background and vice versa.
• Have a sharper or stronger colour for your links to be distinguished.
• Keep a balance mixture of your shadings.
• Do not use too many colours. It will result to a rainbow or fruity-like canvas.

3. Content Placement

Maintain organized contents to make your page in total balance. Some tips are listed below.

• There must be similar formatting and spaces on each of the pages.
• All around margins must also be the same.
• Positioning of contents must be balance to avoid making your pages odd-looking.

4. Optimization

Optimization mainly helps to increase performance and speed. One way to improve your web page's performance is to minimize the use of multi-media materials like videos and images to avoid time-killing loading processes.

5. Design Exposure

Search on the popular and new trends to improve your layout, design, and techniques to add up a lot more exposure to your web page.

Cricut Design Studio - 7 Things Every Beginner Needs to Know

You finally purchased the Cricut Design Studio software. Most likely your next question is, "Now what do I do?" Here are seven things you need to know to jump start your learning of the program.

You can design with all of the cartridges, but you can only cut with the ones you have. Cricut Design Studio has every available cartridge loaded into the program. You can create all kinds of cutting files with any cartridge they offer. While that is fun for experimenting, just remember that when you go to cut the Cricut will ask you to load the specific cartridge used.

You can use more than one cartridge in a cutting. The options are endless. Bring letters and images from any cartridge into the cutting you are designing. When you are ready to cut, the Cricut will ask you to load each cartridge you used.

Cricut Design Studio - 7 Things Every Beginner Needs to Know

Connecting letters together to form one cutting is referred to as welding. In order to weld letters together it is important to remember to check the welding box for each individual letter or image. Another interesting tidbit about welding is that it removes any scorelines on the image.

You can use cut files from other Design Studio users. If you are low on creativity or time, your best solution is to use a file designed by someone else. There are Cricut Design Studio users that freely share their designs and ideas. The best starting point would be the message boards at the Cricut website. There you will find links you can follow to cut files all over the web. Simply download the file to your computer and the open it in the Design Studio.

You need to get updates to the Cricut Design Studio at the Cricut website. The updates not only fix any bugs in the program, they also add the latest cartridge releases for you to design with.

When previewing a cut, if it is welded together, the cutting lines will be in a bold line. If an image previews as a solid color then it is not welded. It is easy to miss checking the welding box on a letter as you are creating, and this is a sure-fire way to make sure that none of them are missing.

You can use several layers when creating a design. For example, If you are creating a shadow for an image you need to open a new layer just for the shadow. Otherwise, when you go to cut it will cut the image and the shadow at the same time using the same paper. When previewing, the user has the option as to whether or not other layers show through to the one they are working on.

How to Fix Scratched PS2 Games

Even though the PS3 is quickly becoming popular, many of us have decided to stick to the PS2. There are more games, cheaper products, and more options for purchase. Heck, you can even download PS2 games on the internet. Of course, these games are going to get a lot of use (because they're awesome!) and eventually you are going to want to know how to fix scratched PS2 games. This article will help.

Is it scratched or just dirty?

Sometimes the problem with our game is not a scratch. Really, the PS2 will read a lot of games with shallow scratches but it really has a problem with caked-on gook. Try cleaning the disc before you attempt to fix the scratch (or you might do work harm than is necessary).

How to Fix Scratched PS2 Games

It's scratched! How do you fix it?

It's actually really easy to fix scratched PS2 games. This is what you need.

Baking Soda Toothpaste a Lint-free cloth (an eyeglasses cloth is perfect)

Before you start you should know that it is not a good idea to wipe your disc in circles. Unlike old LPs (where you had to follow the groove), PS2 Games should be rubbed from the center straight to the outside edge. Wiping in circles does more damage and you want to avoid that.

5 Simple steps to fix scratched PS2 games

Put a little warm water on the disc. apply a little toothpaste to your cloth rub (as directed) over the scratched area and around it. If you have a lot of scratches then you should do the whole disc. 10-15 swipes from inside to out should do the trick. rinse the toothpaste off allow the disc to air dry

See? It's not hard to fix scratched PS2 Games at all. There is one problem to this method though; You can do it too often. Realize that you are grinding down the plastic surface around the crack to make the PS2 think it's shallow. If you do it too often then you will have no plastic buffer left and the foil data layer will get destroyed. For serious problems (or repeated damage) your best bet is to resurface the disc.

Web Design - Project Lifecycle

The process of designing and developing a website can be quite overwhelming and challenging. A lot of thought, effort and discussions lead to the launch of a 'perfect website'. Knowing how hard the entire process is, it will be a good idea to divide the website development process into different stages. This will also lead to effective team management and proper control to achieve maximum quality. Following are the steps of a web design project lifecycle:

1. Analysis

Why do you need a website? Make sure you have an answer to that one before even thinking of going further. It is particularly important in the case of Business Websites. A business must analyze why it wants a website (a business model) - to promote the business, generate revenue or offer support to customers. The website is going to a part of the system. How the web based application or website will help the existing system or the business should be basis of the analysis.

Web Design - Project Lifecycle

After analyzing requirements from a business perspective, it is then time to focus on user needs. Make sure you can clearly classify your target audience and establish functionalities the user will require. Never assume that you know what a customer wants. In fact it will be a good idea for a business to consult actual or potential users and discuss key factors that might affect the website (from a client's perspective).

Input: Interviews with clients, supporting documents and mails, discussion notes, model sites etc.

Output: Cost, Size of Team, Hardware-Software requirements, supporting documents, approval, work plan

2. Specification

A 'functional' specification is a blueprint or a detailed plan of the website. After carefully considering business and user requirements, the next stage will be to form a website specification. What should be included in the menu, how content will be structured, how tasks should be generated etc. are some of the questions to be answered at this stage. A designer gets information on what should be presented and the programmer concentrates on functionality. Prototypes, mocked up web pages or illustrations of how a website will work are also prepared at this step.

3. Design and Development

Drawing from the information gathered in the above two stages, it's time to determine the look and feel of your site. The web designer will create one or more prototype designs for your web site. A lot of suggestions and changes to be made are exchanged between the client and designer at this stage. Design is concerned with how the website looks and if it fits the client requirement. User Experience (UX) and Usability both come into play here. And once the layout/design is finalized, it will be safe to move to the next step of developing. The developmental stage is the point where the website itself is created. The developer takes all graphic elements from the designer and uses them to create an actual functional site. Developing requires a lot of technical knowledge and programming. Content writing for the website is also done in this stage. You can hire professional content writers or write the content yourself.

Close interaction between the design and development team is necessary at this stage. A well designed functional website should be the ideal output at this stage.

4. Testing and Delivery

At this stage, the entire web development team comes together to have a close look at minute details and test the website. Following is a checklist of things to test on your website before launching/delivery: (there are various tools and testers available online)

· Flexibility (Try varying window sizes and font sizes)

· Speed (access the site via a modem & check image size specification)

· Validation (validate HTML, CSS and check for broken links)

· Browser Independence

· Accessibility

Once the website passes the testing phase, it is time to deliver the site. An FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program is used to upload the website files to your server. After your website is uploaded to your server, the site should pass through a final last run trial to confirm if all files have been uploaded correctly and make sure the site continues to be fully functional.

This stage marks the launch of your website, its now viewable to public.

5. Promotion and Maintenance

Once a website is launched and visible to the public, the next step will be promoting the website to get visitors/traffic to the site. Various SEO/SEM techniques can be used to increase site visibility and drive targeted traffic (many web design firms offer these services). This is a very important step, because even though you have a website, it is important for people to find your site.Another important aspect is 'maintenance' of a website. Continuously upgrading a site with fresh content and features will increase traffic, popularity and visibility. You can continue working with your web designers to update information on your website (design firms offer maintenance services at reduced rates) or, if you prefer a more hands on approach, and update your own content whenever required, then a CMS (Content Management System) can be implemented to your website. Its implementation is decided at the planning stage where the designer will utilize software to develop a database driven site.

A website development process will obviously also pertain to company specific frameworks, methodologies, tools and languages, but the steps mentioned above are a broad outline of steps which are necessary to develop and maintain a website.

What Does a Web Designer Do?

We live in a world connected globally through cell phones, satellites, and the internet. The internet is the greatest connection. There are millions of web sites out there and hundreds being created daily. Many people have learned to make a living in this niche of the market by creating these web sites for people who are willing to pay for them. These people are known as web designers.

A web designer creates web pages and then puts them on the internet. That's the simple version anyway. Web designers typically know a bit about computer programming, and they are very efficient in the use of design software. They have to be to design a page. They also know and understand the html language, and many of them know how to create and upkeep web applications. All of these items are necessary when creating a visually appealing, functional site.

A good web designer works with his client to develop a site that handles all of their needs, while at the same time represents that client's personal or business style preference. Web pages can be a lot like art. They are a person's representation of a thought or an idea. The web designer should also know how to work with video and sound media to add a special touch to the site.

What Does a Web Designer Do?

Web design can be learned through a classroom or self-taught. The biggest factor is the time one is willing to put into it. Classes can be found online or locally, and they range from classes like the Chicago Adobe Flex training & class, which teaches web applications, to design software classes, which teach the student how to create, manipulate, and alter images. Anything you can learn online, at home, or in a classroom, will benefit you when it comes time to try your hand as a web designer.

Website SWOT Analysis - A Real Life Example

Do you wonder what is happening to your Internet Business? Why is that you cannot get traffic to your website; the conversion rate is too low; or opt-in visitor is too few?

I was faced with a similar situation lately and I attempted to use what I knew about SWOT Analysis into my Internet Business. I use the same technique to perform a SWOT on a website and had surprisingly discovered some valuable facts for my Website

In this article, I share with you my real-life example of my Website SWOT Analysis. You are invited to use it as a reference to your won Internet Business.

Website SWOT Analysis - A Real Life Example

Below is a sample website SWOT Analysis performed on my own Total Quality Management website I published in year 2001. It was written based on a knowledge-based approach. The ranking for this website is on Google page # 9 and has a PR=2. After 8 years published, it has never moved up to within Google page#3. Some of you may know that my newly published 3 months old SWOT analysis Blog has ranked Google page#1 for the last 3 months. This success story has prompted me to wonder why my Total Quality Management website page ranking is so far behind.

My objective is to move my Total Quality Management website to Google page# 1 - 3 and I performed a Website SWOT Analysis using the SWOT Analysis template and example as my guides. Below are sample my Website SWOT analysis:

The SWOT Factor - Strengths

S1 - 8 years old website - matured

S2 - website contained focused practical examples and case studies of Total Quality Management

S3 - website ranked Google page#1 on Google.com.my with single keyword - "tqm"

The SWOT Factor - Weaknesses

W1 - design of the website is not professional

W2 - website content remain static for several years

W3 - navigation of the website is not comprehensive

The SWOT Factor - Opportunities

O1 - online research on Total Quality Management has high demand

O2 - availability of TQM case studies and report are limited on website

O3 - online website builder software are commonly available

The SWOT Factor - Threats

T1 - website with fresh contents and blogs have moved up to top Google page

T2 - visitor to this TQM website is very low (from awstat)

From the four SWOT factors, I continue to evaluate the seriousness and impact of each factors as a way to prioritize as I continue to use the SWOT template to formulate strategies. Once the strategies are formulated, then only I can take action. I encourage you to take this sample as a case study for your own Internet business or website and Application SWOT Analysis
